This is a 1970's dreamy ivory chiffon vintage dress with the Jean Varon label. Jean Varon was a label that was designed by John Bates, who supposedly chose the name because he thought a french name would be more successful in the fashion industry than his own, which was British. His fabulous mod, op art dresses, including early plastic outfits, were ground breaking and way ahead of their time. There is always a debate as to which designer invented the mini skirt - some say Mary Quant, some say Andre Courreges, but some say John Bates! Bates is perhaps most known for the clothing he designed for Diana Rigg when she was Emma Peel in the 1960's television show, The Avengers.

This vintage dress has sheer chiffon over a more fitted under dress. Full flowing batwing sleeves are a John Bate's signature design element and these have fitted cuffs with covered buttons. There is a back zipper on the under-dress and buttons on the chiffon. This vintage dress is in mint condition and thought the dress appears "whiter" in some of the photographs, it is more of an ivory in color. I would estimate this dress to be a modern day size 6/8 but please use the measurements as a guide, as different manufacturers have different size standards.
