About

This strapless black silk cocktail dress from Heim Actualité is of a classic early-1950s style, with all the detail and precision associated with the popular demi-couture house. Jacques Heim had been a well-known designer since the 1930s, and this dress is from the popular Heim Actualité line he launched in 1950, the first ready to wear line from a Haute Couturier. He was president of the Paris Chambre Syndicale de la haute couture from 1958 to 1962. Making this dress an important piece of fashion history. The grid design of the black silk taffeta is used to full effect with pleats around the torso and hips, which fan out into a tea-length skirt. Little details accentuate the hourglass figure: a bow over the bust is accented by a fold over-style sweetheart neckline to add structure; the grid pattern gets smaller as it reaches the waist to trick the eye; and the flared skirt widens just below the curve of the hips to streamline the figure. This is the sort of Little Black Dress which continues to inspire designers today.
